On May 13th 2011 a silver envelope that contained the below letter and £1000.01 in cash was hand delivered to the artist at his home address in London.
Dear Mr Waller,
My research leads me to believe that you are the painter of a painting I removed from a tree earlier this year. I apologise from the rude and criminal nature of my behaviour, but I simply felt the painting to be too beautiful to be left to decay out in the wild.
To rectify the theft of what was your gift to the city of London, I am enclosing a small symbolic amount of money for its worth.
